Traveling with Dogs by RV is a new experience for most of us, especially if you have a long distance to travel. When planning your trip there are a few things that you can do to make your trip more enjoyable and comfortable for both you and your Dog. Here are some tips when traveling by RV with Dogs:
- First and foremost, make sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations and deworming. Some states require rabies shots to be up to date before entering or leaving the state.
- You will need to take along some type of carrier or cage. If you leave the animal loose in the vehicle they can get in places where they can cause themselves injury and even death by getting trapped in between seats, in cupboards and in the refrigerator.
- Be sure that the temperature in the vehicle is not too hot or cold for them! It can be extremely dangerous for them if it is too hot or too cold inside the vehicle. Dogs can become overheated very quickly because their normal body temperature is much higher than ours is.
- Make sure that you stop frequently so that they can go outside and relieve themselves and let them stretch their legs and exercise! If there is no place for them to exercise, try not to pull over on the side of a busy road or highway. Many rest areas have grassed areas where you can take your furry friend to get a little exercise. (make sure to clean up after they relieve themselves 🙂
There are many RV parks, campgrounds and resorts that allow pets, but there are also many restrictions. Most of them will accept pets for a nightly fee or deposit. Some will charge extra for dogs over a certain weight, and some will charge extra for more than one pet. Sometimes you can find places that allow dogs without any extra fees, but it depends on the individual park.
